A 60-year old woman today attempted to commit suicide by jumping in front of a moving bus near the district collectorate.

However, she escaped unhurt, as the driver applied brakes, police said.

Ramalath, original name Kannammal, claimed that she had married one Kunhi Mohammed, a clerk in Madukkarai Union office and was not receiving pension and other benefits, after her husband died 15 years ago, as it was going to his first wife.

She was deprived of the benefits and property, even after the death of the first wife, Ramalath said, adding that she has no proper document to prove that she was married to Mohammed.

Despite several representations to the administration, there was no proper response and there was no other go but to commit suicide, she said.

As the high drama was coming to close during the grievances day, a 25-year-old woman, along with a one-year-old son, came to the collectorate and tried to pour kerosene over herself in her bid immolate herself. Alert police personnel on duty overpowered her and prevented her.

Her complaint was that police have arrested her husband, after implicating him in false cases and she was not able to contact him for the last three weeks, police said.
