Three persons arrested for illegal possession of live rounds of service guns

Thanjavur: Thanjavur Medical College police on Tuesday arrested three persons, including the son of a retired dean of the college and the divisional manager of a popular private finance company, for possessing 27 live rounds of various types of service guns, including the AK-47, without licence.

With the election model code of conduct being in force for the Assembly elections for Thanjavur constituency on November 19, police personnel, led by Inspector Arogya Doss, was checking vehicles at a temporary check post set up near Tamil University on Monday night when they stopped a man riding a motorbike.

Police conducted a search and found that the man, later identified as Henri Thomas, 40, of Veera Nagar on Vilar road, was in possession of 40 air rifles, which do not require licence. The police was surprised to find in his possession 27 live rounds of various types of service guns including, the AK 47, without licence.

An interrogation revealed that Senthil Kumar, 42, and Senthamilselvan, 34, of municipal colony were also involved in procuring these air rifles and live rounds. The police, on Tuesday, registered a case under section 25(1b) of the Indian Arms Act and arrested the trio.

Henri Thomas is the son of a retired dean of the Thanjavur Medical College, while Senthil is the correspondent of Venkateswara nursery school in Cholapuram, and Senthamilselvan, a native of Tirunelveli, is the divisional manager of Shriram Finance Company in Thanjavur, police said.
