City-based NGO Aram Foundation Charitable Trust on Monday conducted a workshop on self defence techniques to girl students at the Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women here.

Around 250 students attended the camp today. The NGO was planning to cover more than 1000 students during the three-day special camp.

Giving details, Latha Sundaram, managing trustee of the organisation said the event was held to create awareness on self defence among girl students. “Women have become very vulnerable in today’s society. They are easily targeted and in such situations they should know how to use their own belongings to protect themselves,” she said and added that women should first know how to escape and run to safety.

“We have taught them 12 important techniques, which can be easily learnt,” Latha added.

In addition, the students were taught about the legal issues related to crime against women and were also counselled by professionals.
