Twelve-year-old Reflin dons a hat with many feathers. At this age, she has achieved something which even adults cannot do.

A voracious reader, pianist, painter, photographer, skating champion and also a filmmaker, Reflin has authored two books – Restless Birds, a collection of short stories and The Venturesome Seven (The Tale of Mystery), a novel.

A seventh grader from TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, Reflin also has to her credit two short films Oxygen (animation) and Dust. Reflin recently won the Master Roller Skating Inline Champion in 2016.

According to Reflin sheer interest in writing and graphic designing brought her to this stage. Asked how she balanced school activities and her creative work, she said “During school hours, I concentrate on my studies. Whenever I feel like writing I write . I draw inspiration from lot of writers. My list of favourite authors is very long.”

“I have also acted in short film Oru Nimisham and Dust. While I was doing a web graphic designing course, I came across animated short film and then decided to make one. Oxygen is a movie with a social message to save trees for the future generation,” she added.

According to Reflin’s mother Inba Rejila, she and her husband W. Edwin made sure that she read books other than school textbooks at least for half an hour daily. “We wanted her to read something like comics or story books so that she would develop the habit of reading,” she said.

“After she wrote her first book, we took manuscript to a writer Dr. Thamizhachi Thangapandian, who felt it was worth publishing. We took it forward and Francis Publications published the book in 2014. Her second book was brought out by Notion Press Media Group,” Edwin said.

Reflin has been selected to for the Kalai Ielamani award by the State Government.
