Thanjavur: In a daring act, a three-member gang of unidentified thieves entered the locked temple near here in the wee hours today and decamped with a brass idol of Goddess Amman after brutally attacking the temple watchman.

The gang attempted to break open the locked door of the Bhuvaneswari Amman temple located at Thalavapalayam village in the wee hours when the alert watchman, S Subramanian (60), resident of Chenbagapuram, resisted the gang. The enraged gangsters attacked Subramanian viciously with wooden logs. Subramanian sustained a head injury and fainted; he was later admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital (TMCH).

The gangsters then entered the temple and broke open its hundi. As there was no money, they took away the one-foot tall brass idol of Goddess Amman from the temple.

On being informed, Superintendent of Police J Mahesh and other police officials rushed there, inspected the scene of crime and conducted enquiries. Based on a complaint by Subramani, Ammapettai police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
