Chennai: Life is back to normalcy on Tuesday here and in other parts of Tamil Nadu a day after the violence by supporters of Jallikattu, the bull taming sport.

However, the political heat generated by the police action has further increased, with the videos of police themselves burning vehicles, huts and damaging two-wheelers going viral.

People are of the view that the police action to disperse the protesters has been done to prevent any such protest happening in the future by discouraging the common man to take to the streets.

On Monday, actor Kamal Hassan had expressed “shock” over alleged videos of policemen committing arson, via Twitter. He also criticised the police crackdown on the protesters and requested protesters to stay calm.

Talking to reporters at his residence here on Tuesday, Hassan said: “This whole agitation is a symbol of discontent and decades of various kinds of anger. This is not a sudden outburst. It happened because we found a reason. We have always been looking for reasons.”

Asked if the protest should be seen as anti-national, he said: “Several leaders of the past have demanded a separate country for Tamil Nadu. Were they anti-national?”

DMK Working President M.K. Stalin, while reiterating his demand for a judicial probe into the police action against the Jallikattu protesters, added that there was no need for the police to disperse the protesters early on Monday.

He said the police watched the protest from the side-lines for seven days and the assembly was set to pass a law legalising Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu that evening.

Stalin said the police action against the protesters cannot be accepted in a democratic country.

Referring to the visuals of the police setting vehicles on fire and attacking people, Stalin said the action shows the degradation of the police force under the AIADMK rule.

He also condemned Chennai Police Commissioner S. George for terming the protesters as anti-social and anti-national elements while refusing to name them.

As to the controversial visuals, he said the matter will be checked.

In Chennai, police have booked cases against 25 persons for violence.

A senior police official in Coimbatore advised the youth to be cautious about the new friendships that were developed during the Jallikattu protests as there may be some undesirable elements.
