Construction work for the much awaited Ukkadam flyover would begin soon at a cost of Rs. 121 crore, PWD Minister Edappadi K. Palanisamy informed the Assembly today.
Replying to a question raised by Singanallur MLA N. Karthick, the Minister said the work would begin once the land acquisition was completed. “The acquisition process will begin very soon,” he added.
The flyover, once completed, is expected to ease the traffic congestion near the Ukkadam bus terminus.
The plan was announced by former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in 2011 at estimated at a cost of Rs. 339 crore.
The government had even sanctioned funds for land acquisition (three hectare land – both Government and private). But there has been a delay in land acquisition.
The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation had recently laid a two-wheeler track along the bunds of the Ukkadam Big Tank to ease the traffic.
