It read like a filmi script, though the `director’ gave the climax a real life touch. Students of the Hill Tribal Middle School in Top Slip, earnestly desired to watch the blockbuster Tamil movie Singham 3 about the daredevil cop. But Assistant Collector (Training) B. Priyanka Pankajam, IAS, decided to give it a twist and suggested that the students meet the `real singham’.

The officer wasted no time and decided to take the students to the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner’s office and familirise them with police functionings. After getting a nod from Commissioner of Police A. Amalraj, the young officer had organised the trip with the help of his spirited team.

The students were picked early in the morning from their school, reached Coimbatore and interacted with the commissioner. A team of police officials took them around the commissionerate and familiarized them with the functioning of various police departments and explained to them about the duties and obligations of the police.

They got to see the bomb and dog squads and were taken to the nearby police station where they even got to see a lockup.

“This trip helped these students know the real life of the police, their role in maintaining law and order and traffic management, cyber security, prohibition. Basically, this trip helped to dispel any unfounded fear about the uniformed force. They must know that policemen are very friendly and helping in nature” Priyanka Pankajam, told Covaipost.

The 60 odd students were taken in the evening to the newly established traffic park for children and really enjoyed every moment, Priyanka said. The whole expense for the trip was borne by the commissioner’s office and the team of officials, including A. Saravanan, DCP (Traffic), and SI Aiyyar Samy were of great assistance.

“As a student of anthropology, I could realize the backwardness in the tribal belt where people were still dependent on the forests for their livelihood. There are only a few educated among them. I have worked with them in the past months to bring down the dropout rates in the Top Slip school “said Priyanka who is to join the State’s administrative setup in a few months.
