Chennai: A student from Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), who participated in the beef fest in protest against Centre’s ban on cattle slaughter, was allegedly attacked by a student gang in the college campus.

Police said the victim, who was identified as R Sooraj, a PhD scholor in IIT-M, suffered injury in his eyes. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment. However, no arrest have been made so far with regard to the incident.

Amid mounting protest across the country to condemn the Union Government’s decision to ban the sale of cows and buffaloes for slaughter, a group of students in IIT-M allegedly organised a beef fest in the campus on last Sunday to oppose Centre’s move on cattle trade.

The fest, which was attended by about 50 students on Sunday night, created controversy with BJP Tamil Nadu unit demanding suspension of Dean of he IIT-M. The beef was served to the students in use and throw away plates.
