At a time when donating kidney to your family member could bring up so many challenges, here’s a woman who fought against her own family member to donate kidney to her friend.

In a rare case, Varsha Sharma (48) of Rajasthan has now obtained a nod from the High Court to donate one of her kidneys to her friend and Army officer Col Pankaj Bhagwar. Bhagwar is being treat at Columbia Asia Hospital in the City, reports Vartha Bharati.

Varsha had to face stiff opposition from her family when she decided to donate her kidney in 2017, October. The Health and Family Welfare Department had written to the hospital to stop the process of kidney transplantation.

With no option, Varsha had knocked the doors of court seeking to turn down the government order and allow her to donate her kidney. Although the court had asked to settle the issue in one day, the approval committee took one month before agreeing to Varsha.

Anil Srivastav, the founder of Gift of Life Adventure Foundation, had been a constant support to Varsha. Srivastav, a donor himself, hopes that the State approval committee will be liberal in organ donation cases where recipients are not family members.
