Coimbatore : Two DMK workers today attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation, protesting against the Centre for its failure to constitute Cauvery Management Board. Several party workers were arrested for resorting to rail roko.

As the party workers, led by N Karthik, MLA, staged a rail roko at Singanallur station, two DMK functionaries doused themselves with kerosene and tried self-immolation at Peelamedu in the city, some 5 km from the station, police said.

However, a few police personnel deployed for routine security duty overpowered both P T Murugesan and Singai Sadashivam and took in a van to the nearby police station.

Karthik and nearly 100 party workers squatted on the track and blocked Coimbatore-Erode train for a while. Police removed them and took them in a van.

In the meantime, a group of farmers and members some fringe outfits gathered in front of the office of District Collector and raised slogans demanding the Centre constitute the board immediately.
