3 arrested under UAPA, remanded to custody

Coimbatore : Police Saturday arrested three persons under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967 and they were remanded to judicial custody till June 28.

Police had detained the trio– Mohammed Hussain, Shahjahan, and Sheik Shafiullah, after carrying out searches in their houses and seizing some digital devices and incriminating documents on June 13.

The searches were conducted based on information that the trio were staunch supporters of ISIS and have been propagating proscribed terrorist organisation’s ideology in social media. They were also supporters of Zahran Hashim, mastermind of Sri Lanka Church blast, and had praised his act of bomb blast and had conspired to stage terror attacks in Coimbatore.

They were booked under section 18, 38 and 39 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967 and were being interrogated..

All the three accused were taken to the Government Hospital here for medical checkup this morning and later produced before Principal District Judge R Shaktivel at his residence.

The judge remanded them to judicial custody till June 28.

National Investigation Agency has already arrested two persons–Mohammed Azaruddin and Sheikh Hidayutallah–from the city for their ‘pro-IS activities.
