A six-month old elephant calf was rescued from a three-feet tank near a temple in Madukkarai on the outskirts, today.
The calf, part of a herd of elephants, had entered a farm in search of food last night and fallen into the ground-level tank, Forest Department sources said. A person, who came to work in the farm, noticed the herd standing near the tank, and informed Forest Department, which sent a team of 20 officials.
After bursting crackers, the officials managed to scare away the herd of elephants and lifted the baby elephant with the help of a poclain and released it into the forest to forest area, they said.
