Coimbatore : The Collector T N Hariharan Saturday unfurled the Tri-colour to mark the 70th Republic day celebrations in the district.

After taking guard of honour from police and fire and rescue department officials, Hariharan honored freedom fihters by adorning them with shawls.

Tight security was in place at the VOC Grounds, where City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan, West Zone IG, K Periaiah and Superintendent of Police Pandiarajan were present.

Hariharan also distributed assistance through different welfare schemes to 126 beneficiaries worth rs.49.11 lakh and presented 138 police officials from the district with meritorious awards.

Meanwhile, Tirupur District Collector, Palanisamy distributed various welfare schemes worth Rs.63 lakh to 245 beneficiaries at nearby Tirupur.

The Coimbatore City Corporation Commissioner and Special officer, Dr.K. Vijayakarthikeyan unfurled the National Flag at the Corporation Office and handed over Rs. 2,000 cash to 24 Corporation sanitation workers for their services for the past 25 years.

In another function, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Vice Chancellor N Kumar, after unfurling flag said that the University has played a major role in taking Tamil Nadu in fore front in Agriculture.
