A 75-year old farmer, who used to grow coconut trees, died of a massive heart attack, following the pathetic condition of his farm due to non-availability of water and the resultant drought-like situation, in Thekkalur village in nearby Tirupur district.
Chinnappan, who cultivated coconut trees in four acres of his 12-acre land, was believed to be upset for the last few months since there was no water in the seven borewells he dug to save his trees.
As his attempt to get water from the eighth borewell also failed, coupled with the failure of seasonal rains, Chinnappan was often found during the last few days sitting alone, not speaking to anybody, police, quoting his relatives, said.
Chinnappan suddenly collapsed at his house last night following a massive heart attack. Though he was brought to a private hospital here, he died before admission.
Family members and farmers in the area attributed his death to the failure of the monsoon and the loss of his coconut trees.
