Chennai: The police have registered cases against eight persons, who allegedly assaulted a student in IIT-Madras for participating in a `beef feast’ on the campus on Sunday.

R Sooraj, a PhD scholar in IIT-M, sustained serious injury in the right eye and is under treatment in a private hospital here.

Police sources said all the accused were booked under several Sections of the IPC, including creating violence, wrongful restraint, causing hurt and criminal intimidation. No arrest have been made yet.

Amid mounting protest across the country against the Centre’s decision to ban the sale of cattle for slaughter, a group of students in IIT-M allegedly organised a beef fest on last Sunday.

It was attended by about 50 students and the BJP Tamil Nadu unit demanded the suspension of the Dean.

Police also arrested over 50 students from various organisation when they tried to stage a protest demonstration near the campus demanding immediate arrest of the persons who attacked the PhD student.
