Community radio, which has long served as a vital medium for delivering education, healthcare, technology, engineering, and other essential services to the public, is now entering a new phase of growth with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI).

A two-day seminar focusing on the future roadmap and development of community radio was held at Vinayaga Inn Poppys Hotel in the Nilgiris district. The event brought together experts, academicians, and practitioners to discuss emerging trends and opportunities in the sector.

Participants highlighted that with financial assistance from the Central government, institutions can effectively implement various community service programmes through community radio. Experts noted that AI technologies are set to play a transformative role in enhancing content creation and streamlining broadcasting processes.

The seminar also addressed the social impact of community radio, its growth trajectory, and the changes AI is expected to bring to radio broadcasting. Technical experts shared key insights on how these advancements could improve accessibility and efficiency.

The event was organised to guide organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), educational institutions, and media enthusiasts interested in establishing community radio stations.

During the seminar, the book “Community Radio Handbook” authored by Dr. Jeyasakthivel, Professor, Department of Journalism and Communication, University of Madras, was released.

Organiser Vijayakumar stated that the Central government provides subsidies of up to ₹12.5 lakh for setting up community radio stations. Detailed guidance on availing the subsidy and establishing stations efficiently was also provided.

Sessions further covered licensing procedures, technical infrastructure, administrative processes, and financial management related to community radio operations. Discussions also explored new possibilities such as AI-assisted content production and 24-hour automated broadcasting systems.

Representatives from Rathinam College (Rathinavani FM) and Kalasalingam University (Kalasalingam FM) shared their practical experiences. Technical support provided by Airmedia was also explained.

Dr. Praveenkumar of Ramakrishna College and Dr. Pragathi, Professor of Journalism at D.G. Vaishnav College, Chennai, were among those who shared their perspectives at the seminar.
