COIMBATORE: The Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, A. Ganapathi, was arrested on Saturday while allegedly accepting bribe from an aspirant for the post of Assistant Professor in the University.
According to police, Ganapathi reportedly demanded Rs. 35 lakh for the post and finally agreed for Rs.30 lakh from one Suresh. He was caught red-handed by Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption officials, while accepting Rs.one lakh ‘treated currency’, along with some cheques for Rs.29 lakh in his residence, police said.A Chemistry professor in the University, Dharmaraj, was booked for reportedly ‘brokering the deal,’ police said.
The officials are interrogating both Ganapathi and Dharmaraj and searches are on in their residences. With the help of sanitation workers, searches were conducted in the sewage tank and toilets in the residence of Ganapathi.
In another development, the sleuths have taken Ganapathi’s wife Swarnalatha into custody, while she was reportedly found tearing some currencies and throwing in the drainage.
A case will be registered against her for attempting to destroy the evidence in the case.
