The boating service that began in 1989 was shut down in 2000 due to various reasons.

To be operated by the District Tourist Tourist Promotion Council, these boats would be handled by three women. Two boats would be pressed into service initially between Akkulam and Veli tourism village and the numbers would be increased depending on the demand, said State Tourism Minister Kadakampaly Surendran during the inaugural function.

Akkulam village is a popular tourist destination for those who come to Thiruvananthapuram.

Four people can take a ride at a time in a boat and it would cost Rs 600 for a 10-minute ride. Seven people can take a 30-minute ride on the Safari Boat for Rs. 900.
