The organs of a 24-year-old ‘brain dead’ victim of road accident have given a new lease of life to five people. What makes this a particularly poignant story is the fact that the incident has happened soon after the World Organ Donation day.

Aswin, a resident of Mettupalayam, had an accident on his two-wheeler on August 2, and was being given treatment at a local private hospital. When the treatment didn’t have the desired effects, he was brought to KG Hospital in Coimbatore. The treatment failed and scans revealed that his brain had suffered tremendous damage and doctors declared him brain-dead.

The hospital’s cadaver transplant coordinator counseled Aswin’s family and convinced them to donate his organs. The kidneys were given to K.G. Hospital and PSG Hospital; the liver to PSG Hospital, and the eyes were donated to Sankara Eye Hospital.
