Coimbatore: Citizen’s Voice Club president CM Jayaraman has called for immediate steps to improve the condition of city roads.

In a letter to the Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation highlighting the plight of roads, he said they were full of potholes, spoiling vehicles and affecting the spine and back of travellers. The condition of the roads was also cause for most accidents.

It highlighted some important parts in the city like NH Road, Sukrawarpet, Nanjundapuram Road, Mettupalayam, Avinashi, Sathy Road and Pollachi Road where travel was near impossible.

The club was willing to do the repair work, provided local body reimbursed the people who undertook the work.

Besides lack of maintenance of roads; another important thing noticed was their being dug by contractors to lay water or drainage pipes and cables. The licensed contractors collect road-cutting charges, finish their work and just cover the dug parts with mud and go away. Despite collecting substantial amounts, they do not relay the road. The heavy damage caused to roads resulted in accidents, the letter said.

The organisation sought issuing of work completion certificate (in duplicate) after road relaying by the contractors along with the signature of the house owner for whom the road was dug. Only on receipt of this should the bill payment be made. it the contractor will give it to the local body to submit the bill for his work payment. A copy of this should also be given to the house owner as acknowledgement along with the contractor’s signature. Based on the certificate, labour bill should be settled by civic authorities.

This certificate would be equivalent to a mandatory building completion one for assessment of tax and also for EB domestic connection making the contractor more accountable and the house owner answerable if found false.

The letter urged residents, welfare associations and housing colonies to come forward to identify potholes, liaise with the contractor through the corporation to ‘do or let them to do’ at the cost of the corporation.
