Clearing of the plastic waste-filled Rajavakal Channel has begun after The CovaiPost News put out a video story on deplorable state of the water feeder to the Periyakulam and Valankulam lakes in the city.

Initially, more than 150 fishermen from Ukkadam Valangulam began clearing the waste without using proper protective gear. This was when the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation Council (CMCC) had done little.

But on Tuesday, following the video report, CCMC officials stepped in providing earth movers and deploying a team from the Town Planning and Public Works Departments.

All steps to ensure that water flows along the course and is of use to our tanks and other water bodies will be taken, said CCMC Commissioner Dr K Vijayakarthikeyan. “This will also help in recharging groundwater,” he added.
