The Coimbatore Racing Academy is all set for a pan-India expansion plan. A formal announcement in this regard will soon be made by its founder, Tarun Kumar.

With the intention to encourage and promote two wheeler motorsport in Coimbatore city, Coimbatore-based racing fan Tarun Kumar founded the Coimbatore Racing Academy in 2014. The academy trains and teaches two wheeler motorsport enthusiasts and aspirants. Little did he know that due to growing demand from the public he will have to spread the wings of his race academy to other places too.

Coimbatore Racing Academy was started with a vision to bring out the hidden motorbike racing talents in India. The academy has organized many training programmes in the past. Tarun Kumar informed us that students from all over the country come to attend these sessions. The training programmes are conducted by highly experienced track trainers who have participated in various national and international racing events.

In Coimbatore city, the Kari Motor Speedway also doubles up as a training ground. “We choose one weekend every month to train interested candidates. In the past one year, girls and women have shown interest in motorbiking. Our youngest female student is 17 years old,” Tarun shared.

Coimbatore Racing Academy currently has three trainers – Karthik Purushothaman, Naresh Babu and Padmanabhan – who visit the Kari Motor Speedway every month on the scheduled weekend. Apart from this, the academy also conducts workshops on the dos and don’ts of riding motorbikes on bent race tracks. The academy uses a go-carting track to conduct their workshop. Such workshops have been organized in Kerala, Karnataka and a few places in the west and north India. Overwhelmed by the response that this academy has received, the Coimbatore Racing Academy has plans of doing more workshops this year all over the country.

The academy is currently preparing its students to participate in the National Junior Racing Championship scheduled to be organized on April 16 and 17 at the Kari Motor Speedway. We were told that 15 students will participate in this year’s competitions. They have been training since last year to participate in this season’s championship.

Did you know that India has just three race tracks and Coimbatore is home to one of them? Coincidently, India’s only Formula-One Driver, Narain Karthikeyan too is from Coimbatore. The youth from this city actively participate in two- and four-wheeler motorsport racing events. With the growing popularity of the sport, the number of tournaments too has increased.
