The Coimbatore city corporation officials razed down about a hundred shops on the encroached lands in Ganapati, on the state highway today.
For a long time, the Corporation had been sending notices to the shopkeepers to remove the encroachments on the roads, but they chose to ignore them. These shops were choking the road, leading to constant traffic congestion. Finally, the Corporation Commissioner, Dr. Vijay Karthikeyan ordered the demolition of the shops that were occupying the road to Sathyamangalam and Mysore.
Police personnel were deployed to handle law and order issues.
