Expressing serious concern over the death of three farmers in the last two days in Thanjavur, Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) today appealed to the Centre to declare the state as drought hit and announce adequate compensation.
Talking to reporters here, TMC president GK Vasan blamed the Centre for failing to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and Karnataka for not releasing adequate water, leading to drought like situation in the delta districts.
He urged the state government to pay a solatium of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each deceased farmer and also Rs 30,000 per acre for farmers who failed to raise any crop due to water shortage.
Accusing the Centre of failure to find an amicable solution to the problem of fishermen suffering at the hands of the Sri Lankan navy, he said that it also failed to take steps to retrieve Katchativu.
Vasan also wanted the Centre to permanently stop Kerala from building check dam across Siruvani.
