M. Karunanidhi-led DMK, with its 89 MLAs, is all set to be an active opposition party in the state assembly. The AIADMK had won 134 seats. Unlike the previous time, the AIADMK will have to deal with a much stronger opposition.

Intense and heated debates are expected with some of the well-known orators of the DMK party getting elected to the assembly. In his congratulatory message yesterday, MK Stalin, the DMK Treasurer, expressed hopes that the AIADMK will act with restrain.

The election was a bounce-back for the DMK, which had lost its principal opposition status in the previous assembly. From a dismal 23 seats in 2011, it has won 89 constituencies this time. Thanking the voters for their support, Stalin said that the party will work as a responsible opposition party, and take advantage of its strength in the assembly.

According to veteran politician N. Suresh Rajan, the AIADMK cannot ignore the opposition to pass the bills this time due to their sheer numbers.
