M. Karunanidhi, the DMK president, said that the activities of the Election Commission in certain issues were not to the liking of the party.

Talking to reporters after casting his vote, he said that the people of Tamil Nadu are waiting for the Election Commission to take strict action against those who were caught distributing money and gifts to the voters.

Although he admitted that the Election Commission was successful to some extent, people expect punishments for those responsible for these poll violations. The party had also petitioned the Election Commission to extend the polling hours until 7.00 PM, instead of the earlier announced 6.00 PM, keeping in mind the heavy rains. While Chennai, Trichy, Villupuram, and Kancheepuram districts received moderate rains, the southern and coastal districts witnessed heavy rains.

The party said that due to the rains, there were power cuts in many areas, bringing the EVMs to a halt. Following reports that polling was stopped in many areas, the request for extension was made.
