Police arrested a car driver here on Monday for running away with Rs. 3.60 lakh cash meant to be deposited in a bank.

According to police, Mohamed Shajahan (50), an advocate by profession and resident of Srinagar colony in Kumbakonam came in his car to a private bank in Thanjavur to deposit demonetised currencies to the tune of Rs. 3,60,500 in his friend John Sundar’s savings account. He was accompanied by another friend Karikalan.

As the bank officials demanded documents such as aadhar card and PAN card of John Sundar, the advocate decided to deposit the money at the bank’s Kumbakaonam branch. On the way back, Shajahan stopped the car at a mosque at Arulananda Nagar in Thanjavur to offer prayers. Karikalan got off the car and was standing nearby.

Taking advantage, the car driver, Marimuthu, fled with the bag that contained the money, abandoning the car.

Shajahan, who returned from mosque, was shocked to find the driver and the cash missing. Based on his complaint, Thanjavur South police registered a case, arrested Marimuthu and recovered the money from him.
