India’s first tremor security system, which senses variations in the tectonic waves, was successfully tested for the first time at the CSIR-SERC at Taramani in Chennai today.
The system, ‘Early Earthquake Warning and Security System (Onsite),’ developed by Terra Techcom Private Limited (TTPL), in collaboration with Secty Electronics Germany, was tested at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research -Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC) laboratories.
According to the officials involved in the project, the system can sense tectonic waves from a distance of 200 km. In addition to giving warnings, the system shuts off elevators, electricity, gas, and water supply, and opens emergency gates to enable the evacuation of the buildings.
The technology is already being used in more than 25 countries.
The warning system will be installed at the Mini Secretariat, Government of Haryana, Chandigarh.
