Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement on Thursday sought to restrict the number of candidates for elections to the State Assemblies and Lok Sabha, particularly by-polls, to have corruption free elections.

In view of the controversy over the rejection of large number of candidates, including actor Vishal, the movement coordinator, C. Nallasamy, said that there was an incident in 1996, where more than 1,000 candidates have contested for Modakurichi assembly, which created problem for the Election Commission.

“To avoid such a situation, there should be limited number of candidates and also those candidates who polled 0.2 per cent of the total votes should pay the money spent on them by the Government,” Nallasami said and alleged that some candidates were withdrawing from the contest after taking money from others. “This will restrict the number and ensure a free and fair elections,” he said.

Stating that the movement has fielded a candidate in Kathiresan, he said that this was to create awareness about the suggestions of the movement.
Nallasamy said that the candiidates, like Vishal could have been more careful and vigilant while filing the nominations, which would not have led to rejection, leading to such controversies.
