Chennai: Rebel leader TTV Dinakaran on Thursday threatened to move the Madras High Court to stall the proposed AIADMK general council meeting saying that only the general secretary of the party had the power to call the meeting. Incidentally general secretary VK Sasikala is in jail and hence only Dinakaran has the power to call any such meeting his supporters asserted.
He claimed the support of close to 40 MLAs even as a combined opposition delegation, including Congress and the Left parties, called on president Ram Nath Kovind and urged him to direct governor to order a trust vote in the assembly immediately to test the strength of the government on the floor of the house.
Said DMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, “the president gave us a patient hearing and said that he would take a decision after examining the issue.” CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said that it was clear that the government was in minority and it should not be allowed to continue even for a minute as it would be unconstitutional.
With Dinakaran and opposition seemingly working in tandem, chief minister Edapaddi Palanisami was fighting with his back to the wall. On Thursday he held a meeting with all the party MLAs and ministers. It was yet to be ascertained if all the MLAs heeded to his call.
Meanwhile, he cleverly ferreted out old CDs of speeches made by Amma – former chief minister J Jayalalithaa – in which she praised EPS and lashed out against the Mannargudi family, all of whom she threw out of the party in 2011.
Jayalalithaa’s speech was also beamed on a few television channels, as also state revenue minister RB Udayakumar released a CD formally.
This speech is being shown to the MLAs and more important to the cadres, as proof of that the “Mannargudi family” was the traitor to Amma and the people chosen by Amma. In fact, the EPS government has already announced a probe into the death of Jayalalithaa. It is widely speculated that there were many questions that needed to be answered as to why there was such a huge secrecy and there was no access to an ailing chief minister when she was hospitalised – even to her family members Deepa Jayakumar.
The chief minister EPS was planning to go ahead with the general council meeting and was meeting MLAs and ministers in this regard. The general council is expected to remove Sasikala from the party post.
Which is why, Dinakaran and his followers stepped up attack against the government and United AIADMK dubbing it full of traitors.
Thanga Tamilselvan, MLA close to Dinakaran attacked all those who were with EPS and OPS and threatened to teach these ‘traitors” a lesson of their lives. “How can the party be handed over to EPS and OPS who have cheated Chinnamma,” Tamilselvan told media persons outside the residence of Dinakaran at Adyar in Chennai.
As the AIADMK factions were righting against themselves and DMK waiting in the wings, film star Kamal Hasan once again hinted he was joining politics. But he rubbished the government too, to which BJP state unit president Tamilisai Soudarrajan took exception.
“If you have the guts then enter politics formally and fight it out” she said criticising him for doing politics through twitter and TV statements.
