DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly M.K. Stalin has drawn flak from farmers for bringing in a special attention motion in the Assembly alleging that 30 tmc water from Pillur dam was flowing waste into sea every year.
Federation of Agriculturaists’ Association secretary C. Nallasamy, who has embarked on a journey from Kanyakumari to Chennai, demanding justice on various issues, arrived at Thanjavur today. He was accorded a warm reception by various farmers associations.
Addressing the media, Nallasamy alleged that Stalin had brought in a wrong special attention motion in the Assembly without having a basic knowledge of the issue. “The Pillur dam is a major source of water for the hydro electric project. From there, water flows to Bhavanisagar where 2.5 lakh acres of land gets irrigation facility. Later, the water flows into Cauvery and through the comprehensive water schemes it is taken to Chennai via delta districts and Veeranam for drinking water purpose” Nallasamy said. “Where is the question of 30 tmc water flowing waste?” he asked.
Nallasamy also criticised State PWD Minister Edappadi Palanisamy for stating that the project was under the government’s consideration “without having any basic knowledge” on the issue. The Minister also had said that the Government had written to Union Forest and Environment Ministries in this regard.
Nallasamy also wanted to know how the Opposition Leader and the Minister could furnish such false information in the Assembly where former PWD ministers Duraimurugan, Ramalingam and O Panneerselvam were present.
He reiterated that only those who know the issues related to their constituencies should be elected as people’s representatives. In an indirect attack on Stalin, Nallasamy said that one who does not have the capability should not aspire for big posts.
