The Tamil Nadu Cauvery Delta Farmers Association will observe a one-day fast on November 4 in Chennai, demanding that the Karnataka state government release 46 TMC of water from Cauvery. A number of local political parties have announced their support for the protest.

P.R. Pandiyan, the President, Coordination Committee of All Farmers Association in Delta districts, told reporters that the hunger strike will also demand that the Karnataka government stop the construction of dam across Mekedatu, which will greatly reduce the flow of water to the Tamil Nadu delta region.

Pandiyan has said that if water was not released immediately, 25 districts of Tamil Nadu will be seriously affected from January. About 18 lakh farming families will suffer due to non-availability of water for agriculture.

An eight-member delegation of the farmers had gone to Kodanadu to seek the support of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the AIADMK for the proposed hunger strike.
