Within days after sending a letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to intervene and secure the release of the more than 60 fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has, on Friday, reminded the Centre of their plight.

In addition to securing their release, J. Jayalalithaa had also urged the Prime Minister to ensure that the fishing boats and equipment seized by the Sri Lankan Government, be returned to the fishermen as soon as possible.

The reminder comes at the wake of the arrest of four Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy on March 10.

She said that the fishermen would incur a huge loss “with damage to their only means of livelihood.”

With the validity of the 1974 and 1976 agreements on the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) with Sri Lanka being challenged in the Supreme Court of India, Jayalalithaa has also sought for an amendment of the agreements and the restoration of Katchatheevu to India.
