The Food Bank of Coimbatore is set to celebrate their 100th food drive by making food for 1,000 underprivileged people.
Vaishnavee Balaji, the founder of Food Bank, said, “We are planning to make vegetable biryani, raita and one sweet dish. Around 70 volunteers and general public will take part in cooking, packing and distributing the food packets.” The event will take place on December 18 in VOC Park from 7 am onwards.
Vaishnavee launched Food bank in October 2015 and volunteers were roped in through WhatsApp. The concept is simple: when people prepare food at home, they make a little extra and intimate the WhatsApp group. Volunteers will pick up the food and distribute it to the needy.
No leftovers are accepted or distributed.
The service has touched many poor people in Coimbatore. In fact, recently when the city was completely shut down at the death of Chief Minister J Jayalaithaa, Food Bank distributed food packets to police personnel on duty all over city and to the stranded people.
