Six accused in various crimes, including abduction and lodged in the Central Jail here, were today detained under Goondas Act. Mujibur Rehman, Abdul Jaleel, Riyazuddn, Pankadi Faroo, Syed Ibrahim and Manikandan were arrested on November 27 in a case of abduction of four students and holding them captive to seek a ransom of Rs 50,000 each on November 18.
The gang assaulted the students after they realised they would not get money and took away two cell phones, a laptop and a four-wheeler and a two-wheeler, police said.
A special police team arrested the six-member gang and recovered the property and lodged them in the Central Jail here.
In view of their involvement in murder, dacoity, waylay robbery and chain-snatching,the city police commissioner ordered their detention under Goondas Act and the order were served in the jail.
A total 75 accused were detained under Goondas Act in 2017 and eight so far in 2018. Police also warned of detaining those involved in ganja trade, chain snatching and other serious offences under the Act.
