Udhagamandalam: Scheduled for September the centenary celebrations of the AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran have generated considerable interest in various parts of this hill station. It stems from the fact that the actor turned politician has for long been associated with the Nilgiris in general and Ooty in particular.Often he has been heard observing both as an actor and Chief Minister that he had a soft corner for this place.Consequently the proposed celebrations here on September 11 assume considerable significance.

In a bid to make the celebrations different from those in other districts the organizers particularly the district collector J.Innocent Divya are now in the process of collecting photographs relating to MGR and the Blue Mountains.

While this has triggered a hunt for pictures of MGR connected with the Nilgiris incidents relating to his visits to this place narrated by long time residents have started doing the rounds.Topping the list is his visit to areas affected by the unprecedented deluge of November 4, 1978 which had left a trail of death and destruction. His participation in the Annual Floral Carnival at the Government Botanical Garden,a public meeting at the Gandhi Maidan and major national level conferences apart from his plans to make Ooty a leading vacation destination are also being recalled.

Old timers are looking back nostalgically at the film shootings featuring MGR.In particular they refer to the block buster Anbe Vaa and the song ‘Rajavin Parvai’.

Meanwhile the district administration has started organizing a number of competitions to mark the celebrations. It is also getting ready to receive the top brass of the government.
