Independent withdraws leaving 14 candidates in Thanjavur poll

Thanjavur: The number of candidates in the fray for the November 19 elections for Thanjavur constituency has come down to 14, with the withdrawal of nomination by an independent today.

While 29 candidates had filed 36 nomination papers from October 26 to November 2, after the scrutiny, 21 nominations were rejected by returning officer C Suresh on November 3, while 15 nominations were accepted. Today, on the last occasion for withdrawing nominations, V Jagannathan, an independent candidate, took the opportunity to do so.

Prominent among those who are in the fray are M Rengasamy (AIADMK), Dr Anjugam Boopathy (DMK), V Abdullah Sait ( DMDK), MS Ramalingam ( BJP), G Kunjithapatham (PMK), A Nalladurai (NTK) and S Karikalcholan (NCP). Others are independent.

Anjugam is the lone woman candidate for the Thanjavur constituency.
