The loss making Kerala State Road Transport Corporation earned huge profits during Onam season (August 30 – September 6) this year.
While last year the total collection was Rs. 36,47,39,11 during the festival time, it touched Rs 46,48,05,262 this year. On Onam day alone, the Corporation earned Rs. 4,00,88,623 (as against last year’s Rs3,69,37,901). However, the Corporation’s subsidiary unit KURTC earned only Rs 45,64,321 as against last year’s Rs. 49,53,402.
The Corporation operated more services to tourist destinations and neighbouring States and denied leave to its employees.
The new Managing Director, Rajamanickam, had initiated several harsh measures such as rehashing the duty schedules and firing many unproductive employees working on contract basis.
The Corporation faces stiff competition from Government Transports operated by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Also, people heavily depend on private buses for better comfort and service.
