The Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) on Thursday staged a protest in Coimbatore demanding a ban on 100 kg bundles, and replacing them with 50 kg bundles.

The union of bundle labourers, Coimbatore staged the protest in front of South Zone Taluk office on Thursday. The protest was led by the district head of the union, A. Shakabdeen. Various requests, including a welfare union for the labourers, pension for labourers over 55 years of age, and constructing canopies for shade and rest for the workers near the work area were put forward. They also insisted that the state and central governments replace the 100 kg burdens with the lighter 50 kg burdens out of concern towards the human workers.

M.A. Babu, General Secretary of the trade union, and R. Rajan, Treasurer, spoke about the objectives of the protest. Union representatives, members and labourers from various parts of the state participated in the protest.
