Marathon for cancer awareness: 13,500 to participate

The fifth edition of Vodafone Coimbatore Marathon, scheduled for October 1, has attracted 13,500 runners in three categories so far.

The marathon was in aid of Coimbatore Cancer Foundation, a charitable trust dedicated for the counselling, care an support of cancer patients and their family members, the Foundation Managing Trustee, Dr Balaji told reporters today.

Recognised by Tamil Nadu Athletic Association and District association, the marathon has three categories – 21.1 km half marathon, a 10 km run and 5 km run/walk. An 89-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman are the oldest to run the 5 km event, he said.

“The foundation has raised Rs.1.2 crore during the last four edition and the participants have increased from 8,200 to 13,500 this year,” race director Ramesh Ponnusamy said.

Vodafone Business head Murali said that the company has always stood for health safety and well being and associated with many such noble cause.
