Middle-aged couple attempts self-immolation at Coimbatore collectorate

Coimbatore : A middle-aged couple today attempted to commit suicide by immolation at the District Collector’s office seeking to get Rs 12 lakh from a person who had promised of providing them a Housing Board residence.

Jayakumar and his wife Suguna, residents of Ukkadam in the city, had come to the Collectorate to submit a petition in this regard grievances day, police said. The couple suddenly poured kerosene they had brought and attempted to immolate themselves. However, police on duty overpowered them and prevented them from lighting the matchstick, they said.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that the couple had given Rs 12 lakh to one Thirumeni on the promise of getting a house of Housing Board. They said as Thirumeni had allegedly started threatening the couple, they came to the Collectorate for submitting a petition seeking intervention of the administration to get their money back.

The couple were taken to nearby police station for further interrogation.
