Ministerial berth for Alphons fails to cheer BJP in Kerala

Kottayam: The appointment of Alphons Kannanthanam the-politician as minister at the Centre does not seem to have gone well with the BJP leadership in Kerala.

Many senior leaders associated with the party since its formation in the early 80s are yet to recover from the shock of finding a late entrant getting the plum post.

Among the contenders for the ministerial berth in the Central Cabinet were BJP state chief Kummanam Rajashekharan. He had hoped to get recognition for his clean image and ROSS backingSl.

Though Kummanam is not an ambitious leader, party well wishers wanted a leader like him to get representation.
The medical college scam involving a number of BJP leaders had played spoilsport as the central leaders found no one fit for the post.

The lone BJP legislator O Rajagopal, who was junior railways minister in the A B Vajpayee government, is a favourite of all including the opposition. But considering his age, the party decided against disturbing him from state politics.

The party cannot forget Rajagopal as he had made history when he became the first person to win Assembly election on BJP ticket.

But with Alfons’ appointment the party central leadership will struggle to ensure smooth functioning of the party as it will be forced to put up the Maverick ways of the minister.

Alfons, with little political experience, may also find it difficult to take the party leaders in the state along with him.

Political observers feel that the BJP’s plans to woo Christians will fall flat owing to the party right wing tag and association with RSS.

Some within the party feel Alfons cannot be trusted in a long run as he may switch sides. Alfons had ditched the Left Democratic Front in the State which had helped him win an Assembly election. What remains to see how Alfons manages to keep the leaders in the state unit in good humour in the coming days.
