New Governor for Tamil Nadu?

Tamil Nadu may well have a new governor when the term of the incumbent K Rosaiah ends in August.

Reliable sources have ruled out a second term for the governor, who was the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh during the UPA regime and later made way for Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Rosaiah, who held the state together during the most turbulent times when chief minister YS Rajashekhara Reddy died in a tragic helicopter accident, was rewarded for his loyal services to the Congress party and 10 Janpath with a gubernatorial posting in Chennai, his second home as it is to several people from Andhra Pradesh who had grown up in Chennai.

Rosiah had enjoyed good rapport with chief minister J Jayalalithaa and his term as governor has been one of the most peaceful and non-controversial unlike in neighboring Karnataka, where the government and the governor were at logger heads a couple of years ago.

But even though Rosaiah’s good equation with the chief minister, sources said that the Modi government was inclined to let the Congress nominee fade out rather than give him a second term.

Before his term runs out in August, his successor would be named, sources in the union capital said.

The chances of senior union minister Venkaiah Naidu are said to be bright as he is seen as an amiable person with good rapport with the Tamil Nadu chief minister. Incidentally, he rushed to Chennai to contradict union power minister Piyush Goyal’s charge that Jayalalithaa was inaccessible. “I never had any problems in meeting Jayalalithaa ji,” Naidu told press persons in a bid to pacify the AIADMK supremo after a union minister levelled serious charges against her.

In all likelihood, the government may veer round to entrusting Naidu with the gubernatorial assignment even though some other names are also being heard.

The appointment of Tamil Nadu government is said to be a part of an overall exercise to energize the union cabinet with a reshuffle, clearing the deadwood and injecting new blood.

Stress would be on giving more representation to party members from Uttar Pradesh that will go to polls next year, sources said.
