In a strong show of support for a drug-free society, more than 300 college students from across Coimbatore participated in the ‘Namakku Vendam – Drug-Free Kovai’ awareness rally and pledge campaign organised by Young Indians (Yi) Coimbatore, under the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), at Media Tower, Race Course, on Tuesday.
The initiative, organised by the Yi Health and Yi Yuva verticals, was aimed at strengthening public awareness on the dangers of substance abuse and encouraging youth to take an active role in building a drug-free Coimbatore.
Singanallur MLA K.S. Sree Giriprasath and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order – North), Coimbatore, P. Thangadurai, IPS, attended the event as chief guests.
The programme commenced with a rally in which students marched with placards carrying anti-drug messages, drawing public attention to the need for collective action against narcotics and substance abuse.Speaking on the occasion, Rahul Kamath, Chair of Young Indians Coimbatore, said the fight against drugs requires the combined efforts of the government, police, educational institutions, parents and civil society. He urged students to become responsible ambassadors who can spread awareness and inspire positive lifestyle choices among their peers.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guests highlighted the growing threat posed by drug abuse and appealed to students to stay away from narcotics while actively supporting awareness initiatives in their campuses and communities.
A key highlight of the event was the Drug-Free Pledge, administered by the chief guests, with all participants pledging to reject drugs and promote awareness among their families, friends and fellow students.The programme also featured awareness performances by Yi Yuva members and a prize distribution ceremony for winners of the Drug Awareness Poster Competition.
Young Indians Coimbatore said the campaign reflects its continued commitment to partnering with the government and the police department in creating a healthier, safer and drug-free Coimbatore through sustained youth engagement and community participation.
