Political parties, barring BJP and AIADMK, on Friday decided to hold series of agitations for five days from September 25 to October 12 in protest against the various taxes imposed on the people by the City Corporation.
A meeting, called by the parties, condemned the taxes – additional deposit for new water connection, fee for garbage collection, reassessment of property for levying tax proposed by the Corporation, which has no elected representatives.
The District unit leaders of DMK, CPI-M, Congress, MDMK, CPI, VCK, KMDK, Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam participated in the meeting.
The leaders alleged that the Corporation was neglecting the health hazards posed by Vellalor yard, where more than 50,000 tonnes of garbage was being dumped.
“Around 20,000 street lights are not working. There are no basic amenities for the people. Without paying attention to the problems faced by the public the Corporation is imposing more tax and burdening them,” they said in a resolution.
The party workers will lay siege of the Corporation on September 25, October 3, October 6, October 9 and October 12.
