Long queues outside the Reserve Bank of India office in New Delhi for getting new-designed smaller-sized notes of Rs 50 and 200 in exchange of normally circulated notes with a limit of Rs 5,000 worth per person are a common sight. It is not ordinary people out there to spend their precious time.
Evidently most of them are doing it as part of their business to sell these on premium to those wanting an early glance of the new currency.
RBI should issue these new notes in plenty to start with in some select cities through prominent branches of public-sector banks so that the public can get these notes. They have been designed in smaller sizes and ATMs should be re-calibrated for these notes.
