Police seek eight-day custody of three held under UAPA

Coimbatore : Police today submitted a petition in the principal district court seeking eight-day custody of three persons, who were arrested under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for interrogation.

Police on June 15 arrested Mohammed Hussain, Shahjahan and Sheik Shafiullah after carrying out searches in their houses and seizing some digital devices and incriminating documents on June 13.

The searches were conducted based on information that the trio were staunch supporters of IS and had been propagating proscribed the terrorist organisation’s ideology in social media and also were supporters of Zahran Hashim, the mastermind of the Sri Lanka church Easter blast and praised his act of bomb blast and conspired to stage terror attacks on temples and churches in Coimbatore.

They were booked under various Sections of UAPA and after being produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody till June 28.

Podanur police today submitted the petition before principal district judge R Shaktivel seeking eight-day custody for further interrogation. It will come up for hearing tomorrow.
