Tamil Nadu Government should take steps to impose total prohibition in the state, taking into account the death of Sasi Perumal, who had fought for the cause for the last 30 years, Union Minister of state for road transport, Pon Radhakrishnan said.

Though it was not possible to impose prohibition at one ago, the Government can immediately fix a date and implement it say in six months, Radhakrishnan told reporters at the airport,on his way to the village of Sasi Perumal in Salem. He was to meet and console the bereaved family members.

Stating that almost all the political parties were in favour of prohibition in the State, he said that by imposing prohibition, lakhs of women in the state would be very happy.

To a question on criticism for hanging Yakub Memon, Radhakrishnan said that the death sentence was prevalent since Nehru’s age. Even many Gandhians had accepted the capital punishment, he said.

“This (hanging) was not not done with the aim to kill a person, but to protect the people and also the law,” he said.
