PSGCAS Hosts Centenary Cultural Carnival – “Skill Craft India” Celebrating the Richness of Indian Skills and Culture

As part of the centenary celebrations of PSG & Sons Charities, PSG College of Arts & Science (PSGCAS), through its School of Applied Skills, organised the “Centenary Cultural Carnival – Skill Craft India” at the GRD Auditorium on the college campus.

The day-long carnival celebrated India’s rich cultural heritage through traditional skills, culinary arts, music, craftsmanship, fashion and contemporary creative expressions. The event provided students with a vibrant platform to showcase their talents, creativity and skill-based learning.
Kalaimamani Dr. Nithyashree Mahadevan, musician from Chennai, was the Chief Guest.

Dr.N.V.R.Nathan,Advisor and Consultant, ASD Education Pvt. Ltd. and NSDC, Chennai, and Dr. Chef Kumaresan Gokulnathan,Culinary Director, CR Group and Brand Ambassador of Charras Meat & Foods, Salem, were the Guests of Honour.
The inaugural ceremony began with an invocation by the students of Carnatic Music, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Dr.M.Jayanthi, Principal, PSGCAS, delivered the presidential address, while Dr.T. Kannaian, Secretary, PSGCAS, delivered the felicitation address.

Addressing the gathering, Dr.Nithyashree Mahadevan highlighted the importance of preserving and nurturing India’s rich musical and cultural traditions. Dr.N.V.R. Nathan emphasised the significance of skill development and the need to equip young learners with industry-relevant competencies. Dr. Chef Kumaresan Gokulnathan spoke about culinary creativity, professional skills and career opportunities in the hospitality sector.

The carnival featured a wide range of skill-based exhibitions, interactive stalls and cultural activities near the Indoor Stadium. Visitors and students explored Indian crafts, culinary traditions, creative products and various traditional and contemporary skill practices.

Several competitions and cultural programmes added colour to the celebrations. The SUNAD and Jugalbandi Music Show offered a lively musical experience, while the “Flavour of India” cooking competition showcased the culinary creativity of participants. The “Food Aura” quiz encouraged students to explore India’s diverse food traditions, culinary heritage and cultural practices.

One of the major attractions was the Fashion Show, held at the GRD Auditorium from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The programme featured a Designer Ramp Show and Glam Walk, where students presented innovative interpretations of Indian cultural aesthetics through design, textiles, styling and craftsmanship.
The valedictory session marked the culmination of the celebrations. The session was attended by distinguished judges, including Chef Anu Selvan, Corporate Executive Chef, Gokulam Hotels & Resorts, Coimbatore, and Mrs. Uma Balajee, Fashion Entrepreneur and Co-founder of Nesavu, Coimbatore.

Winners and runners-up of the various competitions were honoured with prizes and certificates in recognition of their talent, creativity and participation.
The Centenary Cultural Carnival – Skill Craft India served as a celebration of India’s diverse cultural heritage while highlighting the importance of skill-based education. The event brought together traditional knowledge and contemporary creativity, reflecting PSGCAS’s commitment to skill development, cultural preservation and holistic student development.

The programme added another memorable chapter to the centenary celebrations of PSG & Sons Charities and encouraged students to carry India’s traditional skills and cultural heritage forward through innovative contemporary expressions.
